For those looking for a little more excitement, shinny hockey adds a casual, team-based element to the experience—perfect for building skills and enjoying friendly competition. Note 1: 10 ticket passes allow the cardholder to pre-register (hold) and/or drop-in to 10 time slots. Should you wish to hold more than 10 slots, we suggest purchasing multiple 10 passes or our seasonal membership. 

Should you not be able to attend one of your pre-registered timeslots, please call Customer Service to withdraw to avoid debiting your pass. 

Note 2: Allows the cardholder to register for play in two (2) of the 55+, 65+, 70+ or 76+ leagues.

Program rules and safety

  • This skate is unsupervised.
  • Skaters must be 16 years of age and older.
  • All skaters are encouraged to wear a CSA-approved helmet
  • This program is designed for adults 16 and older.
  • Stick & Puck is an informal session with no goalies and no contact.
  • Slapshots are not permitted.
  • CSA-approved hocket helmets are required and hockey gear is strongly recommended. 
  • Children must be accompanied by a guardian who is 18 years or older on the ice.
  • Children must wear a CSA-approved helmet.
  • Strollers are not permitted on the ice nor are parents allowed to carry youth while on the ice surface.
  • Skate aids are provided for the sole purpose of assisting children learning to skate.
  • No person shall be permitted on the ice surface without skates.
  • No person shall be permitted to bring a hockey stick/ puck on the surface during Caregiver and Tot Skate.

Family Stick and Puck provides an upbeat environment for families to improve skating, stick handling, puck control, passing and other related hockey skills. *Please note the Town of Huntsville does not provide sticks and pucks for this program.

  • Stick and Puck is an informal session with zero contact.
  • Goalies are allowed provided they are dressed in full goalie gear. 
  • Please note the Town of Huntsville reserves the right to remove participants for their safety and safety of others.
  • Children must be accompanied by a guardian who is 18 years or older on the ice. Please note the ratio of parent to child is one adult on the ice to four kids.
  • Share the ice fairly, no slap shots. Nets are not to be moved.
  • Please note spaces are limited to ensure participant safety - pre-registration is available.
  • Required Equipment
    • For Children: A CSA approved hockey helmet with face shield (or cage) and hockey gloves. Full gear is strongly recommended.
    • For Adults: A CSA approved hockey helmet.
    • For Goalies: Full goalie gear.
  • Youth 12 years and younger MUST wear a CSA-approved helmet.
  • Strollers are not permitted on the ice nor are parents allowed to carry youth while on the ice surface.
  • Wheelchairs are welcome on the ice at public skates permitted they have clean wheels and participants are wearing helmets. Wheelchair attendants must also be wearing skates.
  • Youth 7 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Skate aids are provided for the sole purpose of assisting youth to skate.
  • No person shall be permitted on the ice surface without skates.
  • No person shall be permitted to bring a hockey stick on the ice surface during public skate.
  • No food or drinks allowed on the ice surface, players bench or penalty boxes.
  • Tag, chase, or reckless behaviour is not permitted.

Shinny Code of Conduct

Purpose: Shinny is intended to be a fun activity where participants can enjoy the game in a safe and respectful environment. 

Player Expectations 

  1. Respect All 

    • Treat all players, volunteers, and Town of Huntsville Staff with courtesy and respect 

    • Welcome players of all skill levels and backgrounds 

    • No bullying, harassment, discrimination, or abusive language 

  1. Play Safely 

    • Shinny is non-contact 

    • Players must give goalies space with puck, and refrain from any physical contact with goalies, whether in or out of the crease.

    • Players must refrain from any rough play that could put themselves or other participants at risk for physical injury. 

    • No checking, fighting, rough play or intentional physical intimidation 

    • Control your stick at all times and avoid reckless actions that could injure others 

    • Report any unsafe conditions or injuries immediately     

  1. Demonstrate Good Sportsmanship 

    • Play at your level 

    • Play honestly and fairly 

    • Respect the spirit of the game and the decision made regarding play 

    • Avoid arguments, taunting or unsportsmanlike behaviour 

    • Support an enjoyable experience for everyone on the ice 

  1. Share the Ice 

    • Players will rotate shifts to allow fair ice time and will work with other players to ensure teams are equal playing ability   

    • Avoid aggressive or dominating play 

    • Be mindful of varying skill levels and help create a positive atmosphere 

  1. Follow the Facility Rules 

    • Full equipment must be worn for all shinny activities   

    • Players are to check in with the customer service desk before each play time 

    • Respect scheduled ice times and leave the ice promptly when your session ends 

  1. Rowan’s Law and Concussion Awareness 

    • Participants are expected to support a safe sport environment by recognizing, reporting and properly managing suspected concussions 

    • If you experience, witness or suspect a concussion, stop playing immediately and inform Town of Huntsville Staff 

    • Any player with a suspected concussion be removed from play should seek medical assessment before returning to hockey activities 

    • Players should be aware of the signs and symptoms of concussion, which may include headache, dizziness, confusion, nausea, sensitivity to light or noise, or balance problems. 

    • Return to play must follow appropriate medical guidance and established concussion protocols 

    • Participants are encouraged to review concussion education resources and comply with applicable Rowan’s Law Requirements. 

Unacceptable Conduct 

The following behaviours will not be tolerated and are not limited to: 

  • Fighting or threatening behaviour 

  • Intentional body checking or dangerous play 

  • Harassment, discrimination, or offensive language 

  • Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs while participating 

Reporting Process for Inappropriate Behaviour 

To maintain a safe, respectful, and enjoyable environment, all participants are encouraged to report conduct that violates this Code of Conduct 

How to Report  

  1. Report the concern as soon as possible to the designated shinny representative and Town of Huntsville Staff. 

  1. Provide details of what occurred, including:  

    • Date and time 

    • Individuals involved 

    • Description of the incident 

    • Names of any witnesses (if applicable) 

  1. Reports may be made verbally or in writing. 

 Review Process 

  • All reports will be reviewed promptly, fairly, and confidentially to the extent possible. 

  • Personal information will be collected and used in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and other relevant privacy legislation.   

  • Individuals involved may be asked to provide additional information. 

  • The Town of Huntsville reserves the right to take immediate action when participant safety is at risk. 

Any inappropriate behaviours may result in any or all the following: 

  1. Verbal Warning 

  1. Removal from the current ice session 

  1. Meeting with Town of Huntsville Staff and Player Advocate Group to discuss concerns and next steps 

  1. Temporary suspension from future shinny sessions 

  1. Dismissal from the program (may be immediate if behaviours interfere with other's ability to safely enjoy participation). 

Staff have the right to remove or move players from a session(s) at their sole discretion. All decisions shall be final. The Town will assign a member of each group to assist with infarctions.  

Commitment 

By participating in shinny, players agree to uphold this Code of Conduct and contribute to a safe, respectful and enjoyment environment for everyone. Respect the game, respect others, and have fun. 

 

Helmet Safety

Do I Need to Wear a Helmet on the Ice? All participants are encouraged to wear a CSA approved helmet. Youth 12 years and younger MUST wear a CSA- approved helmet during all public skating activities. 

Helmets help reduce head injuries and concussions. Know the signs and symptoms following a bump or blow to the head: 

• Headache/pressure in head  
• Nausea  
• Feeling drowsy  
• Dizziness  
• Sensitivity to light  
• Sensitivity to noise  
• Difficulty thinking clearly or remembering  
• Fatigue or low energy 
• Blurred vision 
• Feeling sad, irritable, nervous or emotional
